Successful Time Management = Successful Affiliate Marketing

If you follow my blog, you will know that most people use Affiliate Marketing as an opportunity to work from home. While most people think that working from home is something that can be easily done, anyone who has done it for any length of time knows that it certainly does have its perks. However, it also comes with its challenges and one of the biggest challenges is staying productive. Staying productive can be tough for any job however I think that working from home presents even more challenges since the opportunity for distractions is greatly increased.  In this post, I am going to provide some tips that will help you stay productive and can be used at work and at home.

Some people feel that they are being overwhelmed by information and it prevents them from keeping up. The reality of the issues isn’t really the volume of information that you are receiving. For most people, its how they process and organize the information that they are receiving. If you are organized, you should be able to get a handle on everything that you are receiving, thus you should be able to organize it accordingly.

For example, most people think that they are overwhelmed with e-mail. Most people have themselves well established on the internet which causes them to receive their fair share of e-mails. These e-mails will include those from friends and family along with all the “other” e-mails that seem to come from just about every business out there. How you organize and receive these e-mails can make all the difference in the world. I am not going to get into e-mail handling in this post, however, all those e-mails that come from “other” sources can easily be sent to a specified folder(s), thereby reducing the number of legitimate e-mails to your Inbox by over 80%.

Some people think they have to keep everything because they never know when it might be needed again. Did you know that most people only really need to keep 50% of their stored information?  See, most people use about 15% of the things they keep and file. The other 85% typically gets overlooked (for whatever reason) which makes it in effective.  So, if you can identify the useful information and are able to discard the rest,  you can develop a streamlined, functional filing system. This will make it easier to find what you do keep along and will save you time and energy which allows you to complete  more meaningful tasks (like updating something for your Affiliate Marketing business.)

Believe it or not, some people think that being organized is a bad thing. I have heard some say that being organized actually gets in the way. Being organized is very important. Proper organization actually fosters and supports creativity and spontaneity.

Being organized is not hard at all. All you have to do is use the find and use the tools around you. For instance, almost everyone today has a computer, most of which have an e-mail program of some sort, such as Outlook. Most e-mail programs (even web-based) include a contact list, calendar and  task manager  These tools help you to manage your time and keep track of your tasks, along with storing your personal and business contact information. These are valuable  tools can also be used to pre-plan events and can even block out amounts of time in which you have nothing planned, which is one of the perks of an Affiliate Marketing business and working from home.

I am specifically referencing these in this blog post because I know many people who overlooked these tools.

Lets face it, everyone is busy. For most of us, the day doesn’t’ allow us to get everything we want completed. If you think about this concept, time is really not the issue. The real issue is time management and realistically deciding what you can do with the time you have.

Now I’m not sure where or how you keep track of your tasks because everyone is different. Some people write it down while others use their mobile device. Some don’t even do that, they just keep their tasks in their head and/or shoot from the hip (so to speak)

Most people use multiple methods which unfortunately is not always successful. If you want to be productive, in your personal life and with your Affiliate Marketing business, you need to central your tasks using just one tool. Now this next tip goes along with the one noted above about using Outlook or some other task manager.  See most of the task managers available allow you to create a task, set recurring tasks, set reminders, track status along with various other features depending on the program you are using. These features help you to improve your productivity  because you always know what to do and when to do it.

I have to admit that utilizing the tools around us does take time to set up and some effort to set up. Additionally, we all have to get in the habit of using these tools that are often overlooked. However, once these tools are in proper use you can save a significant amount of time each day by implementing a system to manage your information.

According to some statistics, most people spend about 2-3 hours a day in e-mail. About 60 minutes each day is spent finding & filing information. After setting putting the tips discussed in this post in use, almost 2 hours each day was saved.

This post provided just a few tips that can help you stay productive. If you would some additional tips, that apply more towards working from home and/or Affiliate Marketing, I recommend the following posts:

How to get traffic from Pinterest

Pinterest is the latest social network to take the world by storm. While social network skeptics will call it just another site, the fact is that it is different from the other countless similar sites. What is more, you can use Pinterest to successfully promote your business.

Pinterest defines itself as ?an online pinboard?. It's a place where you pin (mostly) images and other stuff you find interesting and share them with the world. Similarly to the other social networks, you follow people and have followers. Also, other users can repin your pins, thus spreading the word.

While there are no limits on the type of stuff you can pin, Pinterest is not suitable for all kinds of brands. It works best if your product/service can be presented in a visual way (i.e. clothes, furniture, etc.) and in this case the publicity you and your products get on Pinterest could do miracles for you.

In order to make the most out of Pinterest rather than waste your time or even worse - do damage to your brand, you need to know how to use it. Here are some tips to help you with this.

As any social network, Pinterest is a huge thief of time. You need to spend time on it daily in order to be able to follow what others are pinning, to comment on it, etc. You can't expect benefits from Pinterest, if you are not active on it on a daily basis.

Pinterest is about visual appeal. This is why you can't go with crappy images taken with your 10 year old mobile. You need images with professional quality because otherwise you will be doing your brand more harm than good. This doesn't necessarily mean you need to hire a professional photographer - with the right equipment and some skills you can create the images on your own.

When you keep your followers interested, they develop the habit of visiting your board every now and then. One trick to keep your users interested is to post in series. In other words, if you have 10 images you want to post, don't post them all at once but post them one a day in the course of 10 days, stating that this is image 1 of 10, 2 of 10, etc.

If you want to get repins, you need to make it easier for users to do it. One way of doing it is by adding a Pin-It button to your site. Check what Pin-It buttons are available for your platform (i.e. WordPress, Joomla, etc.), pick one of them, put it on a visible place on your site and begin counting your pins/repins.

People are hardly coming to your board to see your products, so post other interesting pictures that will attract users (or keep them, if you already managed to attract them). This helps to attract new users to your account because when they see a cool pic somewhere on Pinterest, chances are they will visit your profile and have a look at your products there. If you post only images of your products, you won't be able to attract random visitors that much.

Photos are the bait but even the most unambiguous photo will benefit from a good description. Additionally, a good description will help your images rank better with search engines, which means more traffic for you. Be concise and precise in your descriptions and your users will certainly appreciate it.

When you use hashtags and when you categorize your pins, this makes them look more organized and they will be easier to find. On the other hand, don't use hashtags at large - i.e. add a hashtag only if you really need it because otherwise your pins will look spammy and users will skip them.

When you pick whom to follow, consider not only if their pins are interesting but also if they have a large group of followers. When you follow such users, and especially if they decide to follow you back, their huge follower base is an undisputed advantage when they decide to repin something you have posted. With such power users one repin can bring crowds to your board!

Like any social network, interaction with other users is key on Pinterest. Because of this, it makes a lot of sense to like and comment on other people's pins. These give you more visibility, not to mention that in return you can get some repins, likes, and comments from other users. However, as with hashtags, you do need to have measure - i.e. don't repin, comment, or like every single pin you see on your screen, because this devaluates your contribution.

Pinterest is not only about static stuff, there is a video section as well. Of course, this is not YouTube but if you can create a cool video about your business, don't be shy to post it. Also, in addition to images, you can use various charts and infographics - these are especially popular among users.

Pinterest is an interesting place and you will hardly have to force yourself to use it. Of course, its main advantage for you is the publicity you get. You might not be able to make a sale on Pinterest but the exposure and the traffic to your site are valuable prerequisites for making more sales, so if your products are suitable for the Pinterest format and audience, don't hesitate but promote them there.

How To Check A Site's Rank

When we build backlinks, submit guest posts, or simply advertise on a site, we want popular sites because these are the ones that are working. While no ranking algorithm is perfect and we can never be sure that the sites we have picked are good ones (or that they will remain so in the future), here are some ranking services to help you decide if a particular site is a high ranking one or not.

The Page Rank service from Google is the most popular way to measure the quality and popularity of a site but it alone isn't enough to give us the correct idea if a site is good or not. There are too many sites with inflated PR, so we can't trust PR alone.

The principle of PR is that sites are divided into 11 categories with ranks from 0 to 10, respectively (plus the N/A category of sites that are not included in the ranking as well). The concept is that the higher the PR, the better the site. Sites that have a PR of 10 are very rare. Sites with PR of 7-9 are more common but still they are a minority because this page rank denotes a very high quality site. If a site has a PR of 5 or 6, this means this site is viewed by Google as a quality site. PR of 3 and 4 are for sites that are about the average. PR of 0 to 2 are for sites that are below the average and therefore aren't the top backlinking candidate.

Unlike PR, Alexa doesn't divide sites in groups. Rather, it arranges them in a list. The most popular sites, such as Google, Facebook, or Twitter are at the top. The concept here is that the lower the Alexa ranking, the more popular the site is. Sites with Alexa ranking under 10K are considered exceptionally popular. Sites with Alexa ranking of 10K to 30K enjoy very good popularity. Sites of Alexa ranking up to 100K do get more than decent traffic. It could be speculated that good sites span up to 200-250K and everything above this are sites with low traffic.

It is best if you use Alexa together with PR. While there is some correlation between the two, it is not an exception to find sites with PR6 and Alexa of more than 100K, or with PR3 or 4 and Alexa over a million. Just cross-check a site in two or more ranking services and this will allow you to determine its relevance.

One of the perks of Alexa is that it also allows to see which country the majority of a site's traffic comes from.

Compete.com isn't as through as the first two services because they gather their data from a sample of 2 million US users only but still it helps to get an idea if a site is popular in the US or not. When you analyze Compete data, you will notice that frequently sites with good PR and Alexa are almost unheard of in the States and vice versa.

Quantcast is also a service targeted mainly at the US market. It also gathers data from a sample rather than the general Internet population but in its case the sample is comprised of Web site masters, who insert a code snipped on their sites, thus allowing to track visitors. Quantcast also gather their data from ISPs and ad companies. Needless to say, Quantcast isn't very reliable because there are millions of great sites that don't use its services but still it is one more service to check, if you are wondering if a site is good or not.

CustomRank.com provides a service that combines several metrics at once to offer a joint ranking. At present, the services it aggregates are MozTrust, MozRank, PageAuthority, DomainAuthority, Alexa, as well as some other metrics, such as load times, date created, and whether it is listed in DMOZ or not. The good thing about CustomRank is that it tries to balance one service with the other to produce a fair rating.

MozTrust, MozRank, together with DomainAuthority and PageAuthority are all methodologies developed by SEOmoz, one of the most reputable names in SEO. Therefore, it can be concluded that these two metrics are very useful for SEO purposes. MozTrust measures the global link trust score, while MozRank measures link popularity. The more reputable a site's backlinks are, the higher the MozTrust score. Both MozTrust and MozRank use scales from 1 to 10 and here the rule is the higher, the better.

ComScore is another company that uses a sample of 2 million users to provide rankings and therefore isn't as reliable as PR or Alexa. Similarly to Compete and Quantcast, it is more useful when you plan your advertising budget than when you are looking for sites to get backlinks from but still the top sites on the Internet are present in ComScore's lists, so this service can be used as well.

Google Trends is mainly about search volume of keywords but one of its less known uses is to compare how two sites fare over time or in different regions. So, if you have some sites you want to get past data for, so that you can predict their possible future popularity, you can do it with Google Trends (Alexa also offers the trendline for a site over time).

Ranking.com is one more service to consider if you are dissatisfied with the rest. It's kind of limited because only the top one million websites are included but if the site you are interested in is not on the list, this speaks a lot about its popularity. Ranking collects its data from an IE browser toolbar, which means the data is skewed because no Firefox and Apple users are part of the sample.

The list of ranking services doesn't end here but these are the ones that are more or less the top ones. Use them in conjunction (i.e. 3 or more together) to determine if a site is good for backlinks. Some of these services are available as Firefox extensions, so get the extension and you will know more about a site the moment you open it.
